About us
Like many new shops, Redwood Bay was born of frustration. The year was 2001, and company founders Adrian Beale and Christine Knight were restoring their Georgian town house in Hampshire. After spending many months searching for furniture and furnishings which fitted the age and scale of their property, they took a holiday to New York for some well-earned Christmas retail therapy and were amazed at the wealth of choice and quality available to the Americans. Sensing a large gap in the marketplace for something between first-time buyer and the interior design trade, Adrian and Christine decided to take a chance and leave their comfortable nine-to-five jobs in order to open their first store offering much of what they had seen in the US.
"It was so frustrating seeing all these wonderful new things that we couldn't buy at home, and worse, finding that the stores we liked such Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel, and Williams Sonoma didn't ship to the UK, so we had to pack as much as possible in our suitcases and bring it back with us. We found that most of our friends were in a similar position to us in that they were on their third or fourth home and wanted something other than the usual flat-pack furniture and bland accessories offered by most of the high street retailers. Like us, they wanted something that felt warm and homely, not cold and contemporary".
Because of this gap in the market Redwood Bay first opened its doors in November 2006, offering a wide selection of furniture, furnishings, home accessories and gourmet food sourced directly from the U.S. exclusive to Redwood Bay.
STOP PRESS: Since then we have now recently moved premises as the many stairs in our first shop were proving tricky for both customers and staff (large kitchen dressers don't like stairs!) and now have a dedicated American food/kitchen shop aswell as a new Redwood Bay - HOME store. Atlantic Homes: We are now also pleased to bring to the U.K. a brand new range of furniture - Atlantic Homes - which we have worked on in conjunction with one of our previous suppliers. The new range encompasses everything we like about American East Coast style, bringing together a cool Hamptons feel but without being either too cold or too beachy. We hope you like it as much as we do!
With online ordering becoming more and more popular, we want to give our customers the reassurance that ordering with us is safe and reliable, so we have just started using the facilities of a large independent company called eKomi who send all our customers a short 3 question email after receiving their order to ask for their feedback.
